As a sexual violence survivor, saying no can be really fucking hard. To anything, really. But something that people don't often talk about that I find is sometimes even harder is hearing no.
When I ask for something that I need or want and the answer is no, my anxiety tells me that I'm a horrible, selfish person who doesn't respect other peoples' needs. But I'm learning to see the word no as a blessing, an opportunity for me to react in a way that honours the trust another person gives me when they assert their boundaries. Instead of saying sorry for asking, I want to start saying thank you for trusting me with your limits.
Digital piece printed on 100lb matte paper cased in a clear poly sleeve. This piece features a drawing of a striped carnation which symbolizes rejection and refusal.
